Lake Huron -> 1.0 Salmonine (Salmon and Trout)

Lake Huron 1.0 Salmonine (Salmon and Trout)

1.1

Establish a diverse salmonine community that can sustain an annual harvest of 2.4 million kg with lake trout the dominant species and anadromous (stream-spawning) species also having a prominent place.

A diverse salmonine community has been maintained over the reporting period through a combination of natural reproduction and agency stockings. Lake trout comprise the majority of salmonine harvest; however, total harvest remains below the management target due to the effects of invasive species.

Wild lake trout production and relative contribution to the population has remained relatively static over the reporting period; these are critical steps towards recovery. Several metrics, such as mean age of adults, have been inconsistently met around the lake, suggested full recovery has not yet occurred. Food web changes are slowing lake trout recovery as evidenced by reduced recruitment (i.e. year class strength) from stocked and wild sources combined.
